Does Surgery Actually Eliminate Diverticulitis Symptoms?
If you have been diagnosed with diverticulitis or are currently experiencing diverticulitis symptoms, your doctor may recommend diverticulitis surgery as a means of treatment. But before you rush off into the emergency room to get a foot or two of your section removed, here’s a quick question – is diverticulitis surgery actually effective in treating diverticulitis symptoms?
The latest statistics regarding the efficacy of diverticulitis surgery are disheartening, to say the least. Research has shown that undergoing diverticulitis surgery only gives you about 5% better odds when it comes to eliminating the diverticulitis symptoms completely (as compared to a treatment plan consisting solely of medication).
Five percent isn’t much of a benefit considering all the hazards associated with surgery – cost, complications, and recovery time, just to name a few. It’s definitely a life-saver for some people, especially those with extreme diverticulitis cases, but is it recommended for everyone? I don’t think so. I think a lifestyle change is far more effective and better in the long run…but that’s just my opinion.
